Because of her school's zero tolerance policy, a high school senior was suspended for giving a drunken friend a ride home. Is zero tolerance counterproductive?

By Dorothea Teasley Zero tolerance is a joke. I have a 7th and 5th grade in the public school system, and I am fed up. I am seriously considering homeschooling. One because the curriculum would be 100% better. The most important reason is the zero tolerance policy. The school and teachers pick and choose on zero tolerance. My son can be verbally abuse, and pushed around when a teacher is not looking and when he informs the staff they just give the person a warning. Yet, when my son is fed up and defending himself the first time this school year he receives in-school suspension. It is the same with my daughter; she was being physically and verbally assaulted by other classmates and nothing was being done. Then the principal told me to my face that it is not a matter of child safety. Zero tolerance if the joke of the socialistic agenda alongside of political correctness. It is of my opinion that my children are possibly targeted, because they go to a Christian church with their grandparents and also because of the fact that I have made it quite clear of what I think and feel about the public school system and both state and federal governments. I have quit volunteering at the school because I refuse to fill out forms granting CPS board to go through my background instead of using a thorough background check that has already been done for job employment. I also refuse to fill out their Federal Survey Cards or label my children as a specific race or ethnicity. Though all my children are bi racial. It is of my opinion that helping and caring for the well being of my friends and neighbors whenever possible trumps so insignificant policy that is only put in affect if the school choose or if Christian or Jewish morals and values are at the root of the problem with the occasional Muslim being signaled out as well.
