Nathan: When parents commit crimes they go to jail and their children don't go to jail with them. Same here: they broke the law and came here illegally and we put them in confinement. too bad! Maybe if we make it hard on you, the next group won't come here illegally.
What would you expect us to do? Put them up in some nice apartment or a 4 or 5 star hotel? We need to confine them so they don't escape. Heck, if we offered really nice accommodations, for free no less, then they would be massing over the wall to get here.
Nope, they need some hardship to discourage them from coming illegally and this is very unfair to those who obeyed the law and waited their turn through the legal immigration process.
The problem with your analysis is that most people are liberal when they are younger: The tend to become more conservative as they get a taste of real life and real responsibilities. Those who attend college are likely to be more liberal, at least initially. They have been on the dole all their lives, they are on the dole for their education, living expenses. Medical care etc.
They get more conservative fast when they have children, pay lots of tax and have responsibility for others.
Generally, kids are on the dole until around 24 or so and the elderly are on the dole from 65 or 70. By "dole" I mean net takers from the economy. We are net contributors in our primary working years, typically 30 - 35 to 60-65. Even if we have retirement assets or a pension, we still are net withdrawing from the system.
